FAQs
- Do I need a referral from my Dentist?
-
NHS patients are referred from their Dentist. Private patients do not require referral. Your Dentist will then be informed of your treatment plan if undertaken.
- What age should my children have orthodontic treatment?
-
We welcome children of all ages. Commencing treatment at an early age can lead to a better result. Our treatment philosophy means patients may be able to start treatment as early as 8-9 years of age. This can involve removable types of braces for expansion, crossbite corrections and arch development improvements. When all the permanent teeth grow a further course of treatment may be advisable, usually incorporating fixed appliances.
- Am I too old for treatment?
-
We treat not just growing children but adult men and women of all ages. Our comprehensive range of treatments — including invisible and traditional appliances — offers the right solution to every patient's needs.
- Is it painful?
-
It is normal to experience some discomfort and soreness initial which can last 5-7 days after braces are fitted. A liquid or soft food diet can help as can placing wax on the fixtures to form a smooth barrier between gums and cheeks/lips.
Call during Practice hours if you have a concern and if all else fails after hours emergency line is: 07843 107041. This should only be used in cases when one cannot correct the problem by placing some wax on the broken brace. Loose fixed braces are not an emergency and can be dealt with at normal Practice hours.
Spaces can open between teeth during treatment and will be closed; also teeth can feel loose during the treatment which is all normal. - What should I expect at my first appointment?
-
Initially a discussion on what is the main concern about the position of the teeth. If ready for treatment some impressions are taken for Study Models and possibly X-rays. Examples of the various braces will be shown to make any decision easier.
- NHS or Private?
-
We provide treatment under 18 on the NHS provided the case assessed falls within the NHS category of the Index of Treatment Need. If not eligible we can discuss treatment privately and our payment plans, which are spread out over the treatment duration.
- Any risks with orthodontic treatment?
-
The main risk can be staining around the fixed braces and is mainly due to poor oral hygiene. We are very aware of this problem and monitor the level of co-operation during treatment. We advise on tooth-brushing techniques and Fluoride mouth rinses to minimize these effects. Also it is important to keep your general Dentist's check up's during treatment. Another risk can be root shortening; this usually causes a very small change and does not affect the health of the dentition. Radiographs will identify patients that would be at risk.

Acceledent - How long does treatment take?
-
Depending on the treatment, this can vary from 12-15 months up to 2 years.
With early orthodontic treatment, ideally starting at ages 8-9, treatment is kept as short as possible. Adult treatment can take as little as 6 months depending on the case.
When extractions are needed treatment can take 18-24 months. - The costs of treatment?
-
The costs of treatment will depend on:
1. Types of Braces used
2. Length of treatment time
3. How complicated the treatment is.
The cost of treatment is spread out over the whole treatment period and includes all visits, adjustments, retainers and check-ups for 12 months after the completion of treatment.
Treatment cost can therefore vary starting from £950 (For Simple Treatments). - What happens after treatment?
-
Following brace removal, retainers are fitted. These can be removable or fixed.
Retention is a very important part of treatment and retainers are advisable to be worn on A long term basis. - Does the Practice accept transfer cases?
-
We are quite happy to continue treatments started elsewhere. An initial consultation would be necessary to confirm the system used.
